ONE ON NOTHING
by Sharolett Koenig
A Tim MacCulfsky Mystery
ISBN 0-9700458-7-5 (251 pages) $19.95
Jacket Blurb:
It's Tim MacCulfsky to the rescue again in this third novel
of the series. Three years after their summer adventure in Plight of the
Children, Rhonda calls for Tim's help to find the whereabouts of a
person she believes might have engineered the fatal car crash of her
brother-in-law. From a secret cyber affair to the rampant antics of a
spoiled thirteen-year-old, the case immediately takes unexpected twists and
turns that lead to a long list of suspects even closer to home.
And Rhonda hasn't changed--or has she? Meeting her
steady boyfriend is only the first in a succession of awkward situations Tim
finds himself thrust into as he attempts to solve the case that is sure to
reveal more of his heart than he's willing to share with anyone...especially
Rhonda.
Excerpt:
"I couldn't sleep one night,
so I got up and started playing on the computer," Rochelle explained.
"One of my friends had told me how much fun she has getting into chat
rooms and meeting people. So I decided to try it. I logged on and filled out
a profile. I was new and the response was overwhelming. I felt like road
kill among vultures. Mostly I talked with love-starved guys who just want to
meet someone interesting. It seemed fun and perfectly harmless."
"The one-on-nothing phenomenon," Tim
said.
"The what?" Rhonda asked.
"The one-on-nothing phenomenon," Tim
repeated. "It's the opposite of one-on-one, which means direct,
personal confrontation or communication. Whereas one-on-nothing means
indirect and impersonal. Even though it's one person dealing with another
person, the impersonality of a computer doesn't transfer emotion or feeling.
There are no consequences or responsibility for one's actions. People tend
to say and do things on the Internet that they normally wouldn't in any
other situation. And it's addictive as well as freeing."
Rochelle's eyes grew larger as Tim explained the
meaning of the phenomenon. "That's it exactly," she exclaimed.
"Just as I was ready to log off, this one guy started asking me
questions. We hit it off and decided to go into a private chat room, so we
wouldn't be interrupted. We seemed to have so much in common. One question
led to another and before I knew it, I had begun sharing details about my
personal life that I knew I shouldn't. But I couldn't stop. And he shared
things about his personal life that piqued my curiosity.
"It seemed so harmless, because we didn't know
each other. We weren't sharing our real names or addresses. We didn't even
know each other's voice or what we looked like."

Sharolett Koenig, a graduate of The
Institute of Children's Literature, is a freelance writer whose work has
appeared in Instructor Magazine, Pets Today Magazine, and Shuttle,
Spindle & Dyepot Magazine, and the poetry anthology Visions and
Beyond. She is a member of the American
Christian Writers Association, Mystery
Writers of America, Romance
Writers of America, and she is serving as secretary of the Mid-Michigan
chapter of Romance Writers of America.
Sharolett’s first mystery novel is a YA entitled Plight of the Children,
the first in a series starring Tim MacCulfsky. The second, Right Up Your
Alley, was released March of 2001. And the third, One On Nothing, was released
on St. Patrick's Day 2003. Sharolett has also begun two other mystery series
with publication dates to be announced. One features a widowed homeschooling
mother of three who writes true crime. The other series casts an older woman as
the main character, who teams up with a younger woman suffering from Marfan’s
Syndrome. Together they discover "The Methuselah Factor" for eternal
youth.
Sharolett has always loved to write and discovered at a very early age that
writing could have a positive affect on her school grades. Watching old
detective shows on TV every night with her mom influenced her decision to write
mysteries.
Sharolett has spent her entire life in the Midwest. Her writing reflects
experiences gained while homeschooling five active children and maintaining a
private collection of over 200 bonsai trees and a happy household on 10 wooded
acres in the country.
Sharolett laments that there’s just not enough time to fit everything in,
so she’s determined to live to be at least 150 years old.
